Some books to help you achieve your own, personal, cottage garden style -

Plants for Small Spaces Clive Lane, Hillier Gardener's Guides publ. by David & Charles, 2005, £14.99, pbk, 192pp. ISBN 0-7153-2023-8. The Cottage Gardener's Companion and Cottage Garden Annuals (see below) must surely have a place on every cottage gardener's bookshelf. This new book should find an even wider readership. Small spaces are not confined to cottage or even small town gardens. Almost every garden has a corner that would benefit from the advice given here and both new and experienced gardeners can enjoy the plant portraits and plant recommendations they will find in these pages.

'Cottage Garden Favourites' by Clive Lane, was re-issued in paperback by David & Charles @ £12.99. (160pp. 100 col. illus., 50 b/w, ISBN 07153 18101) Originally published in 1997 as 'Cottage Garden Annuals', this book will soon dissipate the idea that annuals are only the products of garish bedding displays in municipal parks and gardens! It will introduce the versatility of annuals to the newcomer; whilst the plant profiles will re-acquaint more experienced gardeners, with annual varieties which have been grown for over a century. Cottage gardening with annuals is both colourful and fun - they should certainly not be regarded as the Cinderellas of the gardening scene. Those who have yet to experience the pleasures of creating a flower-filled garden with a few packets of seed, and a little effort, will find this book inspirational.

A revised edition of our Cottage Garden Planner: a Guide for Would-be Cottage Gardeners, has been re-issued. Written by our first President, Pat Collison, with plant names up-dated by Pat Taylor, this 32 page booklet is packed with information on how to grow a cottage garden. It includes sections on what plants to put where, such as which like sunny dry sites or which tolerate shade or those good in clay or chalk soils. There are also lists of plants that are, for instance, good for autumn foliage or have a long flowering period, as well as ones that attract birds or butterflies. It also has several border plans and suggestions on how to make even a modern suburban garden look like a cottage garden.
